IDS’s Reaction to the Government’s Response to the Disability Royal Commission Findings
Independent Disability Services (IDS) acknowledges the formal response from the Australian government, along with all states and territories, to the recommendations of the Disability Royal Commission (DRC).
Key Highlights Include: Of the 222 recommendations 13 recommendations were fully accepted, accepted, or accepted in principle, 130 recommendations were committed to consideration.
Although there is a sense of disappointment across the sector that more recommendations were not fully accepted, IDS is committed to empowering people with disabilities to make their own choices in a safe and empowering way. IDS is committed to continue to support people with disabilities to be given a voice to discuss their experiences as demonstrated during the DRC.
New Registration Categories: IDS believe this will promote higher standards and greater accountability across the sector
Worker Registration Scheme: The proposal for a new worker registration scheme is a positive step towards ensuring that all workers within the NDIS meet specific standards of professionalism and competence. IDS is committed to fostering a highly skilled and competent workforce, and we view this initiative as a vital measure to uphold the quality of care and support provided to participants.
Expansion of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission: IDS supports the expansion of the Commission’s functions to enhance oversight and regulatory capacity is a critical development to maintain high standards and protect the rights of participants.
Enhanced Complaints Process: We commend emphasising making the complaints process more accessible and responsive. IDS is committed to maintaining transparent and efficient channels for addressing any issues that may arise.
Provider Risk Framework: The development of a Provider Risk Framework is a key initiative that IDS strongly endorses.
Platform Providers and Direct Employment: IDS recognises the importance of regulating platform providers and direct employment arrangements. Clear guidelines and protections are essential to safeguard participants and workers.
IDS is dedicated to working collaboratively with the government, the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and the broader disability community to ensure that these reforms are successful in improving the quality, safety, and inclusivity in the lives of people with disabilities. However, IDS acknowledges that there is a lot of work to do to ensure that ALL People with Disabilities’ voices are heard. We will continue to support choice and control to empower people with disabilities to live a fulfilling life in a safe and integrated way.
